Liverpool win EFL Cup with Van Dijk extra-time header

Virgil van Dijk's header deep into extra time gave an under-strength Liverpool a remarkable Carabao Cup final win over Chelsea at Wembley.

Van Dijk had seen a header contentiously ruled out for offside on the hour but there was no reprieve for Chelsea when he glanced home another from Kostas Tsimikas' corner in the 118th minute.

Liverpool's 10th triumph in the competition was achieved without a host of injured star names, including forward trio Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota, also losing Ryan Gravenberch when he was taken off on a stretcher after Moises Caicedo's first-half challenge.

It means Jurgen Klopp's side have achieved the first part of a potential four-trophy haul in the manager's farewell season, but it was a bitter blow to Chelsea and manager Mauricio Pochettino.

They have now lost six successive Wembley finals, including three against Liverpool, and wasted a host of opportunities here.

Liverpool were indebted to goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher who produced another outstanding Wembley performance after being the hero when Chelsea were beaten on penalties in the 2022 EFL Cup final.

In a tight first half, he blocked brilliantly from Cole Palmer while Liverpool's Cody Gakpo saw a header bounce back off the post. Chelsea's Raheem Sterling also saw a close-range effort ruled out for offside against Nicolas Jackson.

As the chances came thick and fast after the break, Van Dijk thought he had headed Liverpool in front on the hour only for the goal to be contentiously ruled out for offside against Wataru Endo following a lengthy Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervention as the Japan midfielder blocked off Chelsea defender Levi Colwill.

Conor Gallagher was also denied by the woodwork, then once more by the defiant Kelleher as he looked poised to make the breakthrough, Liverpool's keeper darting off his line to save while Chelsea somehow failed to score in a desperate goalmouth scramble in the closing moments of normal time.

Kelleher's Chelsea counterpart Djordje Petrovic was called into action in extra time, turning over a header from Liverpool's teenage substitute Jayden Danns while Harvey Elliott shot into the side-netting from a good position, also seeing a header miraculously kept out by the keeper.

And then came that final twist to give Liverpool another Wembley victory over Chelsea and leave Pochettino still seeking his first trophy in England.

'We'll go for it' - Liverpool aim to complete first leg of quadruple

Liverpool head into Sunday's Carabao Cup final aiming to win the first of a potential four trophies this season, while Chelsea target their first domestic trophy for six years.

The game is a rematch of both the Carabao and FA Cup finals of 2022, with Liverpool winning both on penalties.

The Reds lead the Premier League by four points and are into the Europa League last 16 and FA Cup fifth round.

"We'll go for it," said Liverpool's assistant manager Pep Lijnders.

"It's a special game. Special games need special performances so we have to focus on the performance."

With Lijnders and manager Jurgen Klopp set to leave Anfield this summer, Liverpool fans are eager for them to enjoy a triumphant send-off having already won six major honours since they arrived in 2015.

"Our philosophy is to give joy and emotions to the fans," added Ljinders. "I'm really happy that we can give at least a final to start with."

Defender Virgil van Dijk, who will captain the Reds in a Wembley final for the first time on Sunday, said: "We want to make it a special day and get our first trophy of the season.

"The end of the season will probably be very emotional for a lot of people, including the manager, but we are not there yet. We shouldn't look too far ahead, we should look at what is in front of us."

Chelsea's last domestic trophy was the 2018 FA Cup, although they won four international honours after that, the most recent being the Club World Cup in February 2022 - two weeks before they lost to Liverpool in the 2022 Carabao Cup final.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino, who took charge at Stamford Bridge last summer, can win his first prize in England after previous spells in charge of Southampton and Tottenham.

"It means a lot for us, the coaching staff, to get to the final and challenge a team like Liverpool," said the Argentine, who led Tottenham to the 2019 Champions League final where they lost to Liverpool.

"It's a dream for us, we have the opportunity and we are going to fight. I think the team is ready and we're going to be very competitive."

Onana header earns Everton point against Palace

Everton manager Sean Dyche wants a "speedier" verdict for "the good of football" on their appeal against a 10-point deduction after they boosted their Premier League survival hopes with a late draw against Crystal Palace.

Dyche spoke out after his side climbed out of the relegation zone with a point secured by Amadou Onana's 84th-minute header.

The result took Everton up to 17th, above Luton on goal difference.

They had 10 points deducted by an independent commission in November for financial rule breaches, but lodged an appeal the following month. No date for the appeal hearing has yet been confirmed.

"I don't know the dates, we're just waiting. For the good of football, I think it needs to be speedier for everyone," Dyche said after the match.

"I don't think anyone wants them dragged out, whatever it's going to be, let's get on with it. It's not in my hands, though. Who knows [when we'll find out]."

Onan's headed equaliser came after Jordan Ayew had scored for Palace, who announced earlier on Monday that Roy Hodgson has stepped down as manager.

Former Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner has replaced Hodgson, 76, who was taken ill during training on Thursday but is now out of hospital.

Ghana forward Ayew thumped a superb strike into the far corner past home goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and looked to have sealed three points for Palace before Onana's late intervention.

Everton's best chance of the first half came when Dominic Calvert-Lewin rose between two Palace defenders but his header from a Dwight McNeil cross went wide of the post.

Chris Richards and Jean-Philippe Mateta had headers blocked on the line by Everton defenders James Tarkowski and Ashley Young before Palace went ahead.

Tarkowski's header from a corner was saved by Sam Johnstone who then reacted well to deny Abdoulaye Doucoure at the near post.

Palace concede late again

The past few days have been eventful for Crystal Palace, with widespread reports last Thursday that Hodgson was set to be sacked, and the former England manager taken ill later that morning.

The club confirmed on Monday that he was "now out of hospital and doing well".

Hodgson's assistants Paddy McCarthy and Ray Lewington led the team against Everton with new manager Glasner watching in the stands alongside chairman Steve Parish.

Glasner has signed a contract until June 2026 and will take charge for the first time when Palace host Burnley on Saturday.

The Eagles move up to 15th with a draw but will be disappointed not to seal a win as they conceded in the closing stages once more.

After Ayew's goal, they did not push forward as much and were duly punished by a determined Everton side.

"It was a wonderful goal by Jordan Ayew, but we couldn't hold on," said McCarthy.

"We knew Everton would hold us to some questions from set plays and I am disappointed we conceded, but ultimately we are happy with the point and we move on."

Palace have conceded 17 goals in the last 15 minutes of Premier League games this season, with only Sheffield United (19) losing more.

This will no doubt be one of the pressing issues for Glasner to address.

Profligate Everton seal important point

Onana's header secured a vital draw for Everton in front of a restless Goodison crowd.

Sean Dyche's side looked like they would be punished for wasting good opportunities when Ayew gave Palace the lead.

Calvert-Lewin has now gone 19 appearances without scoring in all competitions for Everton and missed two great chances to get back among the goals.

In the second half, another superb ball was delivered by McNeil and Calvert-Lewin headed wide once more. Palace defender Richards' presence may have put him off but an in-form Calvert-Lewin would surely have converted the chance.

52% of Everton's league goals this season have come from set pieces and it is no wonder with the aerial presence in their side.

McNeil provided the assist - his fifth of the season, more than any other Everton player - for Onana's header as one of his excellent crosses was finally converted.

The Toffees travel to Brighton on Saturday (15:00 GMT) as they look to end an eight-match winless run in the league.

Palace boss Hodgson taken ill during training

Crystal Palace say manager Roy Hodgson was "taken ill" during training on Thursday morning.

Palace cancelled a news conference after the 76-year-old fell ill.

It was widely reported on Thursday morning that Palace are set to sack Hodgson, with the club 15th in the Premier League and five points clear of the relegation zone.

Palace face Everton at Goodison Park in the Premier League on Monday.

BBC Sport understands that Hodgson is set to lose his job, with former Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner a strong favourite to replace him.

Hodgson took charge of his 200th match as Palace manager earlier this week, but his side were beaten 3-1 at Selhurst Park by Chelsea.

The club have won three league games since their victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford in September and have lost 10 of their past 16 top-flight matches.

The former England boss is in his second stint in charge of Palace, having returned for the final 10 games of last season when he signed a short-term deal to take over from Patrick Vieira.

He led the club to 11th in the table before agreeing to continue to manage the side for the 2023-24 campaign.

Supporters have displayed banners in recent weeks calling for Hodgson to be sacked and shared their frustration with how the club is being run.

They voiced their displeasure when he substituted Eberechi Eze after 64 minutes in their FA Cup third-round defeat against Everton last month, with some supporters at Goodison Park chanting "you don't know what you're doing".

Hodgson was also criticised by some Palace fans for sending on Michael Olise as a substitute at half-time against Brighton with the team 3-0 down, despite the winger struggling with injury.

Olise lasted 11 minutes before suffering a recurrence of a hamstring problem.

Glasner, 49, lifted the Europa League with Frankfurt in 2022 during his first season in charge when they beat Scottish side Rangers on penalties in the final.

After guiding Frankfurt to the knockout stages of the Champions League last year, the Austrian left the club at the end of the season with a year still left on his contract, following a 10-match winless run in the Bundesliga.
